What to expect

Couples sessions are set at 1.5 hours to give each of you enough time to express your views and still work together towards resolution.

The first five sessions help you, your partner and your therapist get to know each other, name what is going on, set clear goals, and start moving towards a healthier way of being together.

Couples counselling

The five-session block

Every couple starts here. It is structured so both of you are heard, together and on your own.

  1. Intake

    15 min, by phone

    A short consultation

A phone call with one of our therapists to get an overview of the relationship and any immediate goals.

  2. Session 1

    1.5 hours, together

    Where things stand

Your first joint session, where presenting issues and background information are gathered.

  3. Sessions 2 and 3

    One-on-one

    Each of you, separately

Individual sessions for each partner to meet with the therapist privately.

  4. Session 4

    1.5 hours, together

    Recommendations

Treatment recommendations are made. You may finish here, or continue with a treatment plan.

  5. Session 5

    1.5 hours, together

    Follow-up

A joint session to check in on the recommendations and your progress.

Approaches we draw on

Questions, answered

More in the full FAQ.

Do we both have to come?

The block is built for both partners. Sessions 2 and 3 are one-on-one, so each of you also gets private time with the therapist.

Is this only for couples in crisis?

No. Some couples come in during a crisis. Others come because they want to strengthen something good before it wears down.

What happens after the fifth session?

Some couples finish there. Others continue with a treatment plan based on the recommendations from session four.
